1. Basic Out Line.

This Course is Designed to Train the Students with the competencies required to carry out  Navigational Watch rating duties of an officer in charge of a Navigational Watch at sea, Candidates those who complete This Course are awarded with the international certificates that enables you to assist in keeping a navigational watch and AMSA is conducting the Distance learning Programme (DLP) by giving the necessary study material. With further sea service & exams they will be promoted to Chief Officer and then becoming Captain of the ship.

The training programme is provided by Varren Maritime Academy Foundation (VMAF). The programme is conducted in collaboration with Australian Maritime College (AMC), Tasmania, Australia. On successful Completion of all three phases, Certificate of Competency as a Deck Watch-keeper (Second Mate FG) will be issued by Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

2. Eligibility Criteria :

The minimum educational qualification is “A” level and its equivalent (10+2 years of formal study), within the following streams:

  • Science (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) – 45% aggregate

Age Limit : 16 years to 25 years

Eye Sight : No Colour Blindness, 6/6 Vision in each eye & No Eye Glasses permitted.

3. Stage 1: Pre Sea Training Programme

This will comprise 04 months training provided by Varren Maritime Academy Foundation (VMA) at their shore-based academy, located at Survey Number 81, Agalambe Village, Kudje Post, Tehsil Haveli, Land Mark – Mauli hills, District Pune – 411023 – India.

The training during this time will cover the following subjects

  • English Language & Standard Marine Communication Phrases;
  • General Ship Knowledge and Safety
  • Marine Engineering Knowledge
  • Monitor Compliance with Legislative Requirements;
  • Plan and Conduct a Passage and Determine Position;
  • Electronic Aids to Navigation;
  • Safe Working Practices aboard merchant ships;
  • Seamanship Practical.
  • Watch-keeping and Collision Regulations
  • Navigation I: Terrestrial & Celestial
  • Ship Construction & Ship Stability
  • Cargo Handling, Stowage.
  • Navigation II: Bridge Equipment and Meteorology
  • Welding Practical Training.

In addition, the Phase I of this course will also include the four modular courses as required by STCW ’95 namely :

  1. Personal Survival Techniques
  2. Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
  3. Elementary First Aid 
  4. Personal Safety and Social Responsibility
  5. Security Training for Seafarers in Designated Security Duties 
  6. Oil Tanker Cargo Operations

This training and assessment will be conducted by Maritime Foundation – Chennai (Approved Institute By the Directorate General of Shipping Govt of India).

  1. Stage 2: On-board Training Programme

 Students will complete 18 months of shipboard training, which will include at least 6 months of bridge duties in a capacity that fully understudies the officer of the watch.

 a)During this period, the student’s will complete:

 A Task & Guided Study Program (TAGS), covering two booklets of assignments, namely:

(The trainees will be registered to the TAGS Program provided by Australian Maritime College. On completion of TAGS Booklets, the trainee will submit the same to Varren Maritime Academy who will then evaluate the TAGS. The Final Review and Assessment will be done by AMC).

  1. Stage 3: Certificate of Competency – Deck Watch-keeper(DWK)

 Students will attend college in Australia for 8 months at Australian Maritime College, Tasmania, Australia. During this time, they will continue their studies in the required subjects and would complete all of the assessment required for issue of a Certificate of Competency.

Students would also complete the training necessary for the following STCW/other courses:

  • Oil Tanker Familiarisation Course
  • Advanced Fire Fighting
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boat
  • Global Maritime Distress and Safety System
  • Medical First Aid
  1. Course Ware & Teaching Material

   VMA shall provide all the courseware and teaching material for Phase I & II.

  1. Issue of Certificates:

At the completion of Phase 1, VMA will issue a Certificate of completion to students having successfully completed DECK CADET COURSE.

At the completion of Phase II, VMA-AMC shall issue a Certificate of completion of TAGS to all students who have successfully completed the TAGS Assignments.

At the completion of the Phase 3 of this programme, including all assessments and mandatory/other courses, the student shall be issued with a Deck Watch  Keepers(DWK) Certificate of Competency, by AMSA.

At the completion of the Phase 3 of this programme, the students will also be awarded a Diploma in Applied Science, provided he is able to satisfy all criteria for this Diploma.

5. Course Commencement:

 The course commences on February &  August Every Year.
